My dad arrived in Liverpool, England in 1940, from Canada. He was a Scottish Canadian merchant seaman stoking the ship's boilers below decks as the ship was attacked by German submarines and aircraft. The ship, named Europa, brought the Canadian Army to Britain to fight in World War II. When the ship was sunk in Brocklebank Docks my dad signed up as a Canadian soldier and was sent to the army base at Aldershot. After the war he worked as boiler stoker in a hospital boiler room. I was born in 1953 and grew up in the era of rock music, though with a leaning toward jazz and classical. Various rock and prog bands are an obvious influence.
